Safety concerns. Most independent scientific organizations have concluded that genetically modified foods are safe to grow and consume. But some people worry that genetically modified foods are still relatively new and that experts may not have enough information about the safety of eating them. Other people wonder about the potential long-term consequences of releasing genetically modified crops into the environment. For example, some fear that herbicide-tolerant GM crops might spread out of control, becoming herbicide-resistant weeds. They also worry that insect pests might become increasingly immune to crops designed to resist them. http://www.worldbookonline.com/advanced/article?id=ar751688&st=genetically+modified+crops
Lawyer's Web Evaluation http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/geneticall7.cfm Choose one of your websites that you used for your project and evaluate its effectiveness. In your evaluation paragraph (no more please!)include the web address of the website you are evaluating. Things to ask yourself include:
Who wrote the page and when?
What type of website is it? (Educational? Government? Personal?)
Does the article appear biased or persuasive? Does it present factual information and/or both sides of the argument?
Do you think the website was effective for your use? Would you recommend it for use to another student? Why or why not?
1. This page did not include its date of origin and was written by the Center for Food Safety (CFS). 2. The page is an organization’s homepage 3. The article is biased towards the strict regulation of genetically modified crops and letting people know when their food has been modified. Its information was factual but it left out some information pertaining to other laws that genetically modified crops might fall under. It only showed one side of the argument. 4. Even though the website was biased, it was still very effective in my use and I would recommend it to anyone using it since it still provides factual information, but I would strongly recommend that anyone who uses it view other websites as well to get the whole truth.
1.) Cindy Maynard, a dietician, wrote the article in November of 2000.
2.) The website is Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, a database subscribed to by Conestoga.
3.) This article attempts to provide both pro's and con's of genetic modification of crops, and does not lean too far either way. It provides both the positive goals of genetically modified crops, and the opposition's reasons for being against them.
4.) I would recommend this site/article to another student because it was unbiased, showed both sides of the argument, and provided a solid overview of the debate over genetically modified crops.
http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/BHCV2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Genetically_modified_foods_techniques?OpenDocument<span, entitled “Genetically modified foods – techniques,” was last updated in February 2007 by the Better Health Cannel. It is an educational website with quality assured by the Victorian government in Australia. It does not seem to be biased or persuasive as it is mainly facts and processes. It was very effective for my use. I would recommend it for other students as it is precise and very factual. It gives accurate and complete analysis of the processes.
